Release a version of a scene

Releasing declares the scene, as it stands, approved. The version can never be changed or deleted, the scene is locked, and the latest release is what invited clients see when they come in without you.

Mark a version or release one

Both record a moment in the scene's history. They are not the same thing:

Mark version
Anyone who edits. Names a moment you want to find again — Ctrl+S. The scene stays open for editing, and a marked version can be restored like any other.
Release version
Administrators only. Declares the scene approved: the version can never change or be deleted, and the scene is locked. The latest release is what clients see when they look on their own.

Release

Inside the scene, File › Release version…, then give it a name — what was approved, or by whom:

Release version

Release and lock saves the open scene first. ⚠ If that save fails, nothing is released, and the dialog says so. Then the scene is locked and the editor reloads read-only.

What a release means

  • ⚠ A released version can never be changed or deleted — and a scene or project with one can no longer be deleted either. The Explorer greys out Delete and says why.

  • Unlocking the scene (an administrator, on the project page) lets people edit it again. The release stays exactly as it was.

  • The Explorer shows a scene's latest release beside it.

  • In History released versions are marked Released and can be restored like any other version. Export MVR on one of them exports that version itself, not the live scene. History opens on an unlocked scene; while the scene is locked, unlock it first.

Why sharing depends on it

When you present, clients see the scene as you work on it. When they come back without you, they must not see unfinished work — so they see the latest released version, and their header says Released version with its name.

That is why two things in Share with client need a release:

  • Invited guests coming in on their own (Let invited guests in automatically). Until there is a release, they wait at the door like everybody else.

  • Until … — letting a guest come back on their own until the link expires.

Edits after a release do not reach those guests until you release again. See Share a scene with a client.
